Reflection Topic 1 - Project and Office Management

I am currently a Junior Designer at Airloom Decor. My Practice Journals are intended to be a reflection of my growth within the field this far in the position which I am placed at. My current placement stems from the company which I was placed at during my Internship in 2019 and have now continued into 2020 as a Junior Designer.

My current duties include design development and managing design deliverable's to clients such as 3D renders and Floor plan layouts with specification of materials used, as well as 3D furniture modelling and renders which are then converted to website ready products on photoshop and illustrator for Airloom Decor's online retail store visualization tool. My focus also includes fabric design details and colour palettes for application to multiple surfaces such as floor, upholstery and rugs.

Client meetings- Our client meetings are not done in the traditional sense of taking the clients brief and working through the Appraisal Stage 1 of a project. Instead, once a request for a refurbishment is logged. One of our flooring technicians are sent out with a LiDAR device to the clients site where we will scan the room being refurbished. Our firm focuses on small scale Residential projects and Flooring Renovations.

This will then collect micro-dot data converting the space from a 3D scan to a AutoCAD and SketchUp file. This file is then taken into our 3D modelling program which allows manipulation of floor, wall and ceiling materials and incorporating existing site details and client specifications/brief.

Clients Brief- Once we have retrieved the clients 3D space for modelling their brief is then modeled out into the rendering software which would allow the client to have a 3D visualization of their request, from here the client responds with changes that need to be made or approves of the design set out. If changes are to be made the client has the option of coming into the office and making these changes with the Interior Designer or requesting them online through the 3D renders provided.

Consultant Information- The Consultants information is organized to the client through our app which allows the client to deal directly with the contractor who has been appointed for the particular works. The client is then able to make direct contact or set up meetings where necessary. The Project details will then all be recorded through the app of meetings and notes as well as changes made for the next contractor to pick up on.

Hierarchy of Consultant team- My position within the consultant team is direct liaising with the client of the appointed project. I have secondary contact to the contractors of the appointed project from the flooring technician upon completion of a site survey as well as the information captured (photos, notes etc.)

Interaction of Consultants team- My interactions with our sales team, admin staff and managing staff are on a daily basis. I am in constant contact with our flooring specialist which provides the quotations and specifications for flooring on our site jobs.

Emailing Clients/Consultants/Contractors- The format we use is professionalism, as long as we keep our tone professional and as concise as possible, it lessens the room for confusion and miscommunication between parties involved in the project. A tip I was given from the very start of interacting with all staff members, consultants and clients is to confirm meetings, telephonic conversations and notes via email and where possible with documentation as well as imagery.

Company PI (Professional Indemnity Insurance)- The nature of the company's business and the scale of the project the firm receives, in my Senior partners opinion, does not need a PI. The company does minor Residential Refurbishments to flooring and decor details as they are a decorating company. Most of their work entails refurbishment of flooring.

Their new 3D rendering software has allowed them to offer their clients a visualization tool of a single room or space which requires minor changes to be made to, such as rearrangement or replacement of furniture decor items along with ceiling, flooring, wall and window treatments. The software also allows for actual existing companies to add their decor items, should Airloom Decor not stock/manufacture the required item or that of which the client requires to decorate their space in real time. These decor items are then modeled out and put into the 3D rendering space which will create a 3D visualization of the clients brief.
